100 percent effective
Biontech is facing US license for children 12 and over
In the United States, teenagers under the age of 16 will soon be able to get vaccinated. Manufacturer Biontech should receive approval for children aged 12 and over at the beginning of the coming week. In Europe, on the other hand, it will probably take a little longer.
In the United States, Biontech and Pfizer’s corona vaccine is reportedly nearing approval for children and adolescents between the ages of 12 and 15. The FDA is examining a corresponding application from the US pharmaceutical company Pfizer and could give the green light for an emergency approval for this age group early next week, CNN reported, citing a government official.
An FDA spokeswoman did not want to confirm the timeframe mentioned in the reports. The authority will process the application “as quickly and transparently as possible,” she said. So far, the Biontech / Pfizer vaccine has been approved in the US and the EU for people aged 16 and over.
The EU Medicines Agency (EMA) is currently examining the release of the vaccine for children and adolescents between the ages of twelve and 15. According to the EMA, a decision is expected in June. In March, Pfizer published the results of a clinical study with 2260 12 to 15 year olds. According to this, the vaccine is 100 percent effective for people in this age group. He is also well tolerated. The observed rare side effects would have corresponded to those in the age group 16 to 25 years.
Compared to adults, far fewer children get corona. When they have a disease, many children have mild or no symptoms. Nevertheless, vaccinating children and adolescents is considered to be a decisive step on the way to so-called herd immunity.
