After the riot at the Capitol: Police chief resigns

The head of the Capitol Police has announced his resignation after massive criticism. Steven Sund is accused of failing to protect Parliament adequately from violent demonstrators.

As a consequence of the storming of the US Congress by supporters of the elected President Donald Trump, the head of the police authority responsible for the security of parliament resigns. The head of the Capitol Police, Steven Sund, will resign on January 16, the AFP news agency learned on Thursday from the police department.

Nancy Pelosi had demanded consequences

The Capitol Police are heavily criticized for the riot. Many sides accuse her of not having adequately secured the parliamentary seat against the angry Trump supporters. The chairman of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, had called for Sund’s resignation.

The rioters broke security barriers at the Capitol on Wednesday and wreaked havoc in the building. The parliamentarians had to be brought to safety by the police. Police chief Sund said after the excess of violence that his authority had only expected a rally by Trump supporters.
