Has the Chinese President turned down an invitation from Joe Biden? The US president rejects the rumors. However, there should have been a longer phone call.
US President Joe Biden has rejected a media report that China’s President Xi Jinping is said to have turned down an invitation to a personal interview. “That is not true,” said Biden on Tuesday to a report in the Financial Times. The paper cited numerous sources that were informed of a 90-minute conversation between Biden and Xi last week.
Accordingly, Xi should not have accepted the invitation and instead insisted that the US government should adopt a less sharp tone towards China. An insider confirmed to Reuters that the representation of the “FT” was correct.
The phone call between Biden and Xi was the first in seven months. Both heads of state discussed the need for competition between the world’s two largest economies not to degenerate into open conflict.
