US border guards have rescued two young children who had been dropped from a four-meter high wall by people smugglers on the border with Mexico. The border protection agency CBP announced on Wednesday (local time) that there were two girls aged three and five from Ecuador. The sisters were examined in the hospital and are there temporarily in care until they are handed over to authorities of the Ministry of Health.
Border guards observed the incident on Tuesday evening near Santa Teresa, New Mexico, and came to the aid of the children. Border Guard released a video that showed a smuggler sitting on the border fence, lifting one girl over the barrier and then dropping it on the US side. The girls are left alone in the dark. The smugglers run away on the other side of the border.
The US president is under pressure
US Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas condemned the action: “The inhumane way in which smugglers abuse children and profit from the desperation of their parents is criminal and morally reprehensible.”
The number of migrants apprehended on the US southern border with Mexico has recently risen significantly. These include more and more unaccompanied children and young people. According to data from the border guards, almost 9,500 unaccompanied minors crossed the border in February alone – almost twice as many as in December. Families and single adults will be expelled from the US authorities, but unaccompanied children will not. President Joe Biden’s administration is under increasing pressure because of the dramatic increase in the number of incoming migrants.
