US President Donald Trump raised the mood against Governor Gretchen Whitmer during an election campaign appearance in the US state of Michigan. “You have to get your governor to open your state,” Trump called on Saturday (local time) to his supporters in Muskegon, alluding to Corona containment measures. Then his followers chanted: “Lock them up!” Trump said, “lock them all up.”

Last week, investigations by the federal FBI and Justice Department in Michigan led to the arrest of more than a dozen suspects, who are alleged to have planned the kidnapping of Governor Whitmer and the assault on Parliament in Lansing. “I think they said she was threatened,” Trump said as the shouts rose again. “And she blamed me!”

Whitmer: “It has to stop”

Whitmer had accused Trump of fueling anger in the corona pandemic. In the spring, Trump had fueled protests against Whitmer’s measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus and wrote “Free Michigan!” written. On Saturday, Whitmer responded to Trump’s remarks. “This is exactly the rhetoric that has put the lives of me, my family and other government officials at risk. It has to stop,” she wrote on Twitter.

Less than three weeks before the election, despite the ongoing pandemic, Trump is holding appearances in particularly competitive states. Michigan is currently experiencing a dramatic increase in new corona infections. According to the local Ministry of Health, more than 2,000 were detected on Friday – more than ever since the beginning of the pandemic. With the slogan “Lock them up!” Trump supporters considered his challenger Hillary Clinton in the election campaign four years ago.
