According to the President of the United States, the alliance was able to strengthen due to his demand to increase the defense budgets of the allied countries
The North Atlantic Alliance has intensified significantly over the past three years due to the fact that the US President demanded that the Allied countries bring their defense budgets to 2% of their GDP. Trump said this at a press conference that took place on Wednesday before the bilateral talks between the American president and Italian Prime Minister on the sidelines of the NATO summit in London.
Answering the question of the journalist about what was the reason for holding a separate meeting of the leaders of the countries, which brought the level of their defense spending to 2%, Donald Trump emphasized his role in this process.
Two-percent investors … are countries that have paid in full … These 2 percent are 2 percent of their GDP … I am proud of them … And there are nine [countries] in total [on the list]. When I first arrived here, [on this list] there was not a single [country], ”Trump said.
The US president added that over the past three years, NATO has grown significantly. “[NATO Secretary General Jens] Stoltenberg will tell you that this happened because of Trump. Because I said, “You have to pay.” Other presidents came, spent two hours and left … I said, “No, you have to pay.” And therefore, NATO has become stronger, much stronger … than ever, ”said the head of the White House.
He added that thanks to increased spending, NATO countries began to purchase more weapons. “I hope we never have to use it … But the stronger we are, the less likely we are to use it,” added Donald Trump.
