Doug Fisher, editor-in-chief of The Ring, spoke in his weekly column about the last weekend’s bantamweight championship bout (up to 53.5 kg) between France’s Nordin Ubaali and Filipino Nonito Donaire.
“In my opinion, Donaire has one of the best left hooks in history alongside Joe Fraser and Felix Trinidad. He became the guy who got The Ring’s “knockout of the year” against my favorite Vik Darchinyan. What a brilliant way to announce yourself to the American public!
I sat in the ringside for his debut fight 20 years ago, but then I never thought that I was looking at a future Hall of Fame member. It was okay to think that he would not show anything after the fight with Inoue, given his age and length of career, but I still hoped that he would perform well against Ubaali because of his style, ”the columnist wrote.
