The new Jeep Grand Cherokee

In keeping with the tradition of the faded Detroit Auto Show, Jeep has presented its new long-wheelbase Grand Cherokee. But while the 5.20 meter monster will soon conquer the streets in the USA, the shorter European version is not expected until the beginning of 2022.

The fifth generation of the Jeep Grand Cherokee is in the starting blocks, but initially only in a long version with three rows of seats for the American market. Here the 5.20 meter long Grand Cherokee L will make its debut in the course of the second quarter in the traditional Laredo, Limited, Overland and Summit equipment lines. The shorter, five-seater Grand Cherokee will follow at the end of this year. For Europe, the almost 4.90 meter long SUV is not expected until the beginning of 2022.

The Grand Cherokee L can also be recognized as a Jeep at first glance. However, the designers have punched him in a modern interpretation of the typical Jeep style elements. The radiator grille with the seven slots is wider and more compact. The hood and driver’s cab of the vehicle are elongated. In the side view, the lowered waistline and large side windows are noticeable.

Lots of space thanks to the lush wheelbase

Thanks to its lush wheelbase of 3.09 meters, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has six or seven seats. Depending on the level of comfort, the seats have massage and ventilation functions and can of course be adjusted electrically. The trunk volume comes to a volume of 1328 and almost 2400 liters, depending on the seat configuration. Digital instrument clusters, head-up displays, ambient lighting and the fifth generation of the Uconnect infotainment system are already on board, as are current assistance and connectivity systems.

Two motors are available for propulsion. The basic unit in the USA is the well-known 3.6-liter six-cylinder with 290 hp and a maximum torque of 348 Newton meters. This engine is designed for a trailer load of up to 2.8 tons. As an alternative, the 5.7-liter eight-cylinder with 357 hp, which is coupled to an eight-speed automatic. There is also a plug-in version for the shorter Grand Cherokee.

The luxury SUV, which is based on a new platform, can be ordered with the familiar 4×4 systems. There is also air suspension that regulates ground clearance and fording depth using adaptive damping. The driver can choose between five driving modes (auto, sport, rock, snow and mud / sand). As a “Trail Rated”, the long Cherokee has steel underrun protection plates, an electronic limited-slip differential on the rear axle and 18-inch aluminum wheels and a fording depth of up to 61 centimeters.
