US experts: Probable connection

Can corona vaccinations trigger heart infections? Probably yes, says the CDC, which has investigated a link between the disease in young patients and previously administered mRNA vaccines. But the risk is very manageable and the benefits of vaccination outweigh the disadvantages.

US experts see a connection to the so-called mRNA vaccines as “likely” in the occurrence of hundreds of cases of myocardial inflammation after a corona vaccination. This conclusion is suggested by the data available so far, according to a presentation by a group of experts convened by the US health authority CDC. The advantages of a vaccination against the coronavirus would “clearly outweigh” the risks. There should also be a new warning for the vaccines.

The experts examined the suspicion that the mRNA vaccines from Biontech / Pfizer and Moderna could occasionally cause inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis) or the pericardium (pericarditis) in young people. To do this, they evaluated data on more than 300 confirmed myocarditis cases in adolescents and young adults who had recently been vaccinated against corona with an mRNA vaccine.

“Myocarditis is a rare disease, but not a new one,” said pediatric cardiologist Matthew Oster. So far it is assumed that the disease is usually caused by viruses. “It seems that the mRNA vaccines may be a new trigger,” said Oster.

Vaccination of children is controversial

As of June 11, 323 patients under the age of 30 had been diagnosed with myocarditis or pericarditis following corona vaccination in the United States. On the other hand, there are more than 50 million vaccine doses that were previously administered to twelve to 29 year olds. The number of diseases is therefore relatively low, but higher than would be expected for this age group.

309 of the patients had to go to hospital, where nine are currently being treated. Most cases occurred in young men and within a week of the second dose of vaccine. There has been no confirmed death so far. CDC boss Rochelle Walensky said last week that these cases are “rare” and that “the vast majority” of those affected have “fully recovered with rest and supportive treatment”.

Since children are much less likely to get seriously ill with Covid-19, corona vaccinations are controversial in this age group. However, the head of the department for infectious diseases in children at Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New York, Lorry Rubin, pointed out that in the United States since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 3,000 children have been hospitalized because of Covid-19 and more than 300 have died. In addition, there are about 2,700 deaths under the age of 30. In total, more than 602,000 corona deaths have already been registered in the USA.

The product from Biontech / Pfizer is so far the only corona vaccine in the USA that is also approved for children from the age of twelve. The Moderna vaccine is approved for ages 18+.
