IBF Officially Sanctions Teofimo Lopez vs. George Cambosos

The International Boxing Federation (IBF) has officially sanctioned the fight between American lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez and Australian George Cambosos. Both sides have been notified of the need to start negotiations and must reach an agreement by February 6th, otherwise a promotion bid will be scheduled. This was announced by the representative of the IBF Carlos Ortiz.

“IBF Lightweight Champion Teofimo Lopez won the title on December 14th, 2019. His mandatory defense was to take place no later than September 14, 2020. Currently the # 1 contender is George Kamposos. Negotiations should start immediately and end by February 6, 2021. If the parties fail to reach an agreement within 30 days, the IBF will schedule a promotion auction.

Failure by the champion to fulfill his obligations will be enough for the board of directors to consider the issue of revoking his title. Failure to comply with the rules by a challenger will result in the International Boxing Federation recognizing the next ranked boxer as a mandatory challenger and moving the offending fighter below 10th place in the rankings for at least six months, ”Ortiz said.
