According to BoxingScene.com, the Dominican Javier Fortuna (36-2-1, 25 KO), the WBC lightweight (up to 61.2 kg), has submitted a petition to the World Boxing Council to sanction the fight with the reigning American champion. Devin Haney (25-0-0, 15 KO).
Fortuna claimed the fight with Haney at the end of last year, but the American injured his shoulder and was out for a long time.
Later, the WBC stripped Haney of champion status and tried to play the vacant title between Fortune and Briton Luke Campbell, but the fight did not take place due to the pandemic, after which the WBC decided to return Haney’s belt.
The Dominican tried to fight the Venezuelan ex-champion in three weights Jorge Linares and again unsuccessfully – Linares withdrew due to a positive test for COVID-19.
The first number in the rating at the moment is the former champion, Ukrainian Vasyl Lomachenko (14-2-0, 10 KO), who suffered his second career defeat in October.
