Ex-President Donald Trump had promised his voters a wall on the border with Mexico. His successor Joe Biden is now finally breaking the dream.
US President Joe Biden is canceling the further construction of the wall along the border between the United States and Mexico, the Department of Defense announced on Friday (local time), according to the US magazine Politico.
“The Department of Defense has begun to take all necessary measures to cancel border protection projects,” Pentagon spokesman Jamal Brown is quoted as saying.
In one of his first acts, Biden had stopped building the border wall by freezing money for the project and repealing Trump’s Emergency Ordinance.
With the termination of the contracts, the final out of the wall should be sealed. A defense ministry spokesman announced that the funds will now be redistributed to schools for military children, overseas military construction projects, and the National Guard and Reserve.
The decision was met with criticism on the part of the Republicans. Senator James Risch from Idaho described the move to the US magazine The Hill as a threat to national security.
