WORLD NEWS

US President Joe Biden confirms the planned replacement of the ambassadorial post in Germany: Political scientist Amy Gutmann is to head the diplomatic mission in Berlin in the future.

The USA should soon be represented again by an ambassador in Germany. US President Joe Biden confirmed rumors that Amy Gutmann was chosen.

The 71-year-old president of the renowned Pennsylvania University with German-Jewish roots would be the first woman on the post. The personnel officially announced on Friday had already leaked a few days ago.

Senate still has to approve

Gutmann described it as a “significant and extraordinary honor” to be nominated for such an “important position”. She looks forward to representing the values and interests of the United States vis-à-vis “one of our closest and most important European allies”. Until she is confirmed by the Senate, she will keep her office as university president. She continues to plan to give up the post after 18 years at the end of June 2022. In the event of confirmation by the Senate, Gutmann added that she would resign a few months earlier.

Gutmann’s nomination has yet to be approved by the US Senate, which could take a few more weeks or even a few months. Great importance is attached to the new beginning in German-American relations. The ratio had reached a low point under ex-President Donald Trump.

The post of ambassador has been vacant for more than a year. Richard Grenell, who was sent by Trump, resigned at the beginning of June last year. Since then, the embassy has been provisionally led by envoy Robin Quinville.
