Former world junior middleweight champion Jarrett Heard was defeated on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather vs. Logan Paul. The 30-year-old fighter returned to the ring after a year and a half of inactivity. This time, between his fights, he gained especially a lot of excess weight – according to the statements of the fighter himself, he ate up to 217 pounds (98.4 kg). This is what made him take this fight to the category above, in the framework of the average weight. His rival was 30-year-old gatekeeper Luis Arias.
From the very first rounds, Arias began to actively attack the opponent with a jab and right straight to the head and body. Realizing that under such an incessant hail of blows, Jarrett Heard could lose the fight, he did not play a boxer, as in his previous fight, but returned to his old style, trying to “crush” an opponent who was inferior to him in size. The rain that fell over the arena prevented both boxers from getting ready for the fight, and forced them to pause the fight from time to time and wipe the canvas with a towel.
In the second round, it seemed that Jarrett Hurd would be able to turn the tide. He managed to deliver several power blows to the target, Louis got a cut, his face was covered with blood. Arias, however, was not going to give up and in the third round struck a lot of powerful punches that cooled Heard’s ardor. In the future, Jarrett allowed himself to be pressed against the ropes, applied a lot of power punches on the right, due to neglect of defense, he constantly missed powerful passes of the opponent, and his poor physical shape did not allow him to finish off his counterpart at dangerous moments.
In the ninth round, Louis slipped several times and during one of these falls, which coincided with a hit from the ex-world champion, he was knocked down. In the final round, Jarrett Hurd did not even try to win – having missed a few punches, he broke down, began to clinch and from the side it seemed that the fighter was trying to just hold on to the decision of the judges. One of them gave the victory to him with a minimal advantage, but the other two interpreted the fight differently, putting the score in favor of Luis Arias. Alas, Jarrett, who dedicated this fight to his deceased father, earns a second defeat in his career, and Louis wins a well-deserved victory and gives a new impetus to the development of his seemingly faded career.
Fight Result: Louis Arias defeated Jarrett Hurd via split decision (94-95, 97-93, 96-93).
