Maximum number of new infections
USA plan to stop entry from India
The US wants to restrict entry from India in the coming week. The White House justifies this with the high number of cases in the Asian country – and with the different variants that are in circulation there.
The US government wants to restrict travel from the South Asian country from next week due to the devastating corona crisis in India. On the advice of the US health authority CDC, the government will implement appropriate measures from next Tuesday, said White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki.
It did not provide any information about which restrictions should then come into force. The US entry restrictions issued so far in the pandemic apply to foreigners who come from certain states. Psaki justified the step with “extraordinarily high case numbers” and with the circulation of several variants of the corona virus in India.
Furthermore, due to the pandemic, there is in principle an entry ban for foreigners from the European Schengen area, Great Britain, Ireland, China, Brazil, South Africa and Iran. Entry from these states is only possible for foreigners with a special permit (“National Interest Exception”). Last weekend, Germany had already imposed an extensive ban on entries from India.
Vaccinated more than 100 million Americans
The corona situation in India is devastating. According to information on Friday, a global record of new infections was recorded in the country within a single day. According to figures from the Ministry of Health, more than 386,000 infections were registered within 24 hours. Another 3,498 people died with or from the virus during the same period.
In the South Asian country of more than 1.3 billion people, hospitals and crematoriums are overcrowded. Medical oxygen is scarce. The US State Department advised American citizens to leave the country on Thursday. At the same time, the voluntary departure of family members of American employees of the diplomatic missions in India was approved.
In the US, 101.4 million people are now fully vaccinated. The CDC announced this. In total, more than 308.7 million doses were delivered and 240.1 million administered. Around 144.8 million people have been vaccinated at least once. There are 328 million people in the United States.
