Mayoral election in New York

Ex-police officer decides primaries for himself

Former police officer Eric Adams will run for the Democrats as the top candidate in November for the office of Mayor of New York. Should he win the post in the crisis and crime-ridden metropolis of eight million, difficult tasks lie ahead of him.

Brooklyn district president Eric Adams sees himself as the winner of the Democratic primary in the race for the office of mayor of the east coast metropolis of New York. “I am honored to be the Democratic candidate for mayor of the city I have always called my home,” wrote Adams on Twitter after the US news agency AP declared the former police the winner after counting almost all of the votes.

In the liberal stronghold of New York, a Democratic winner in the primary is also the most likely winner of the actual election in November – Adams would be the successor to Bill de Blasio, who can no longer run after two terms in office. At the same time he would be the second black head of the city.

With the Republicans, the founder of a citizens’ initiative for more safety on the streets, Curtis Sliwa, had already been declared the winner in June. The count in the democratic vote two weeks ago had taken time because of a complicated electoral system. According to the last intermediate result, Adams was one percentage point or almost 8500 votes ahead of Kathryn Garcia, the former city cleaning agent.

Adams is considered moderate and in the election campaign he had promised a balance between his rather friendly line towards the often criticized police and justice, especially for blacks in the face of structural racism. In addition to the reform of the emergency services, the dominant issues in the election campaign were the economic recovery of the city of eight million after the Corona crisis and the increasing violent crimes in the metropolis. Above all, civil rights attorney Maya Wiley, who had been in second place for a long time, took significantly more radical positions in relation to Adams, based on the “Black Lives Matter” movement.

New York City is the largest city in the United States and the world’s cultural and financial center. In the USA, the metropolis is also politically more important than other cities.
