Many young people in Nigeria use Twitter. The government sees this as a danger. Now that a tweet from the president has been deleted, the country wants to block the short message service.
The government in Nigeria, West Africa, wants to suspend the short message service Twitter indefinitely. The Ministry of Information and Culture announced this on Friday on Twitter. The platform had previously deleted a tweet from Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari and suspended the account of the head of state for twelve hours. The ministry did not give a specific reason for the suspension, but pointed out that the platform was repeatedly used for activities that could undermine Nigeria’s existence.
After the announcement, it was unclear when the decision should take effect. Twitter is very popular in the most populous country in Africa. In the past year, young Nigerians repeatedly used the platform to organize protests against police violence.
