Pig head smeared in front of the door and house facade

US NEWS

Two high-ranking politicians in the USA have apparently been victims of vandalism. A pig’s head was laid in front of the door of the Democrat Nancy Pelosi, and the door of a Republican was smeared.

The homes of the two most senior members of Congress – House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell – were damaged. This is reported by several US media, including CNN.

Early Friday morning, a San Francisco home owned by Nancy Pelosi was damaged, according to the San Francisco Police Department. “Unidentified suspects have sprayed graffiti on the garage door and laid a pig’s head on the sidewalk,” police said in a statement made available to CNN.

Mitch McConnell’s Louisville home had been graffiti streaked early Saturday morning. The Kentucky Republican described the incident as a “radical tantrum.” “Vandalism and the politics of fear have no place in our society. My wife and I are not intimidated by this toxic playbook. We just hope our Louisville neighbors are not bothered too much by this radical tantrum,” said McConnell in an explanation.

“Where’s My Money” was written on McConnell’s front door in white spray paint. The police have taken over the investigation, but have not yet identified any suspects.

Background: defeat for Trump

The debate about the so-called “stimulus checks”, the financial aid for the population in the corona pandemic, is seen as the background for the two acts. A few weeks before the end of his term in office, US President Donald Trump suffered a historic setback: the US Congress overruled Trump’s veto on the defense budget with an overwhelming majority. After the House of Representatives, the Senate also opposed the President on Friday – including numerous party friends of Trump. It is the first time in Trump’s tenure that a formal objection by the president to a bill has been thrown down by Congress.

Pelosi, hailed the President’s “overwhelming reprimand”. “Rather than keeping Americans safe, the president continues to use his last moments in office to create chaos and undermine our security,” she said.

Most recently, Trump had reviled the Republican leadership as “weak and tired”. The head of the Republicans in the Senate and previously loyal Trump supporter, Mitch McConnell, was not impressed by it. At the start of the Senate session on Friday, he again called on the Republicans to approve the defense budget. The USA would have to be armed against “competitors like Russia and China”, he said, among other reasons.
