Russia: Navalny network classified as “extremist”

The Russian authorities are increasing the pressure on the organization of the opposition member Navalny: The regional offices are now considered “extremist”. The employees had already prepared for this.

The regional offices of the organization of the imprisoned Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny have been classified as “extremist” in Russia. The Navalny network was on Friday on the list of “terrorist and extremist” organizations of the financial regulator Rosfinmonitoring, which had recently announced an update of its list.

At the same time, for example, the accounts of those affected are blocked. This list includes, for example, the terrorist organizations Islamic State and Al-Qaida.

The judiciary bans work

According to Nawalny’s team, the regional staff do not exist as a separate organization or as a legal entity. “How can a non-existent organization be included in the official register?” Asked the staff on Twitter.

The Russian judiciary had already banned the organizations of the opposition from working at the beginning of the week. On Thursday, the opposition’s team stopped the work of the politically active staff in the regions. The aim was to prevent employees and supporters from threatening convictions if the organization was classified as extremist. According to the company’s own information, there were almost 40 regional offices across the country. This network is the most important political force in the country, it said.

“Instrumentalization of the judiciary”

The opposition accuses the Kremlin of using the judiciary to destroy everything that Navalny and his anti-corruption movement built up over the years.

The Kremlin opponent was arrested in January after returning from Germany, where he had recovered from an assassination attempt with the neurotoxin Novitschok. He was sentenced to several years in prison for failing to fulfill probation requirements in previous criminal proceedings
