Strengthening “close ties”: Biden receives Merkel in the White House in mid-July

Strengthen “close connections”

Biden receives Merkel in the White House in mid-July

It is not their first personal meeting in Washington, but this time Joe Biden has a new role: Chancellor Merkel is traveling to the USA in mid-July at the invitation of the President. The list of topics for her visit is long.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will be received by US President Joe Biden in the White House on July 15. The Chancellor’s visit will strengthen “the close bilateral ties” between Germany and the United States, the White House announced. The trip will be the Chancellor’s first visit to Washington since Biden took office.

Topics of the meeting include the challenges of the corona pandemic, climate change and the support of economic prosperity and international security “on the basis of our common democratic values”.

The “Handelsblatt” had previously reported that the Chancellery was preparing a trip to Washington to settle the dispute with the US government over the Nord Stream 2 Baltic Sea pipeline. Most recently, Merkel’s foreign policy advisor Jan Hecker and Biden’s security advisor Jake Sullivan sought ways out of the pipeline dilemma in Washington, according to the information. Germany submitted proposals on how the conflict could be defused. These should now be further elaborated and coordinated and then serve as the basis for the meeting between Biden and Merkel, according to the paper.

On the one hand, the German concept aims to make the aid that Germany is providing for Ukraine more visible. On the other hand, it includes considerations to expand support for Kiev. Merkel and Biden will already meet at the G7 summit in Cornwall, UK. It is not yet known whether a bilateral meeting is also planned there.
