The new number one: Toyota overtakes GM in the USA

The decision Toyotasstocking up on chips for his cars has paid off. Not least because of this, the Japanese now have for the first time the eternal top dog in the USA General Motors suspended. But the Japanese automaker, whose American dealers themselves are struggling with delivery problems, does not boast of its triumph over Detroit.

Between April and June, Toyota sold 688,813 vehicles in the United States, a wafer-thin lead of 577 cars over GM, according to the two companies’ figures. It’s the first time a Japanese automaker has topped the US, according to car buying website Edmunds.com, at a time when the US politically sensitive trade deficit is widening.
