The investigation may result in the introduction of new import duties
The U.S. Department of Commerce said on Monday it has launched another national security investigation, known as “Section 232. It could result in new import duties on key components of electrical sheet steel for transformers and related products.
The investigation into the import of transformer plates and cores is partly aimed at protecting the latest U.S. electrical manufacturer AK Steel, a division of Cleveland-Cliffs, which has been advocating for lower import duties.
“The guaranteed domestic supply of these materials enables the United States to respond to major power outages affecting the population, critical infrastructure and productive capabilities of the U.S. defense industry,” the U.S. Department of Commerce said in a statement.
