New York Governor Disagrees with the Idea
President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he was considering quarantining in New York and parts of New Jersey and Connecticut. The President said this while talking with reporters in the White House before being sent to Virginia, where the head of state later participated in sending the Comfort hospital ship to New York.
Answering a journalist’s question, the president said that he was not sure that companies in the United States would resume operations on April 12, given the recent outbreaks of coronavirus in several major cities, including New York.
“We’ll see what will happen,” the president said, adding that the administration “wants to return our country to work.” Trump praised the work of medical staff during the coronavirus pandemic: “Doctors, nurses, first responders all do phenomenal work, excellent.”
The president said that he had a telephone conversation this morning with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
“We are thinking about some things. Some people would like to enter quarantine in New York because it is the epicenter of New York, New Jersey. Maybe one or a couple of other places, some parts of Connecticut [will be] in quarantine. I’m thinking about it right now, ”Trump said.
The president added that a final decision has not yet been made, but “there is a possibility that we will quarantine at some point today.” According to Trump, the quarantine is expected to last two weeks and will definitely affect New York, “possibly New Jersey and some parts of Connecticut.”
Answering a journalist’s question about a possible ban on leaving quarantined areas, the president answered in the affirmative: “Ban on leaving. Because they [New Yorkers] created problems in Florida. Many New Yorkers drove south. We do not want this. Severe infection. ”
Trump added that he had a “good dialogue” with Governor Andrew Cuomo: “We provided him with a lot of things. We provide him with four additional medical centers … This is in addition to what we have already transferred, ”the president emphasized.
However, the Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, immediately stated that he did not speak with Trump about the possible introduction of quarantine in New York.
“I don’t even know what that means. I do not know how this can be legally feasible. And I don’t know what could be achieved from a medical point of view. But I can tell you that I don’t even like the way it sounds; without even realizing what it is, I don’t like the way it sounds, ”Cuomo said.
On Saturday afternoon, March 28, more than 52,000 coronavirus infections were confirmed in New York State, 8,825 cases in neighboring New Jersey, and 1,291 cases in Connecticut. In all three states, 6,424 people died from COVID-19, most of them in New York.
