Otherwise, the President has promised to forcefully open all places of worship in the United States.
President Donald Trump on Friday called on state governors to open all religious sites that had been closed due to the Coronavirus pandemic this weekend, warning that he would otherwise take advantage of the presidential authority to force temples across the country.
Speaking at a press briefing at the White House, the President said that places of worship – churches, synagogues and mosques – were vital to the people and must be reopened as soon as possible.
Places of worship were closed by state authorities as part of measures to combat the spread of the coronavirus. As disease rates have been declining in many parts of the country, states are beginning to gradually open up the economy, but in many cases temples remain closed.
Trump had warned the governors that he could force them to open temples, but had not specified the grounds on which he would do so.
“If the governors don’t do it, I will force them [to open temples],” the president said, adding that America needs prayers especially now.
