The Organization calls for the protection of people who are further stressed by the pandemic.
The Coronavirus epidemic could lead to a global major mental health crisis, the UN warned Thursday, calling for urgent action to alleviate the psychological suffering caused by the pandemic.
“After decades of neglect and underinvestment in mental health services, families and communities are now under additional stress from COVID-19,” UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned in a video message to mark the release of the study.
“Even after the pandemic is brought under control, sadness, anxiety and depression will continue to affect people and communities,” he added.
The UN study pays particular attention to the mental tension that people experience because of fears that they or their loved ones will be infected or die from the coronavirus that took the lives of some 300,000 people around the world after its appearance in China late last year.
