First, US diplomats in Cuba complained of strange symptoms. Now the same complaints appear to be occurring among employees at the US embassy in Vienna.
The US is investigating reports of mysterious health complaints by US diplomats in Vienna. “As far as Vienna is concerned, we are vigorously investigating reports of possible inexplicable health incidents in the local community of the US embassy in coordination with our inter-agency partners,” said US State Department spokesman Ned Price on Monday. This of course also applies to other places where these complaints would occur.
The New Yorker magazine recently reported that around two dozen US intelligence officials, diplomats and other government officials in Vienna had described mysterious complaints. These would be similar to the symptoms of the so-called “Havana Syndrome”. Dozens of diplomats and their relatives living in the Cuban capital Havana had complained of puzzling headaches, hearing loss, dizziness and nausea from 2016 onwards. Similar complaints have been reported elsewhere in the world.
In 2019, researchers wrote that the complaints may be related to pesticides. The exact cause is unclear. It is not known whether these incidents are some kind of attack or what is behind it, said White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki on Monday.
