Senate Committee on Foreign Relations comments on the “inauguration” of Alexander Lukashenko
The US Senate Foreign Relations Committee has commented on the “inauguration” of Alyaksandr Lukashenka, which was reported after the fact by the Belarusian state media. For the first time in the history of Belarus, the inauguration of the president was held in secret, the ceremony was not broadcast on television.
The Pul Pervy telegram channel, close to Lukashenka’s press service, reported on the afternoon of September 23 that “Lukashenka has officially taken over as president.”
“The fact that Lukashenka’s ‘inauguration’ was carried out in secret is further evidence that he has lost all legitimacy as a leader. He is not the president of Belarus and must resign, ”the Senate committee said in a statement.
In a commentary to Voice of America, State Department officials recalled that on August 10, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the United States “is deeply concerned about the holding of the presidential elections in Belarus on August 9, which were neither free nor fair … The results announced by the authorities were falsified. The United States cannot consider Alexander Lukashenko the legally elected leader of Belarus. ”
The State Department called on the official Minsk to carry out a national dialogue and give the citizens of Belarus the right to choose their leaders in free and fair elections under independent supervision. The US diplomatic department also once again called on the Belarusian authorities to release the illegally detained citizens and stop repressions against peacefully protesters.
“This will be the first step towards a genuine national dialogue,” the State Department said.
