Federal Foreign Minister Maas is concerned about the recent announcement by the US President. Donald Trump wants to cut the troops in Afghanistan by almost half.
Federal Foreign Minister Heiko Maas has warned of the consequences of an early US withdrawal from Afghanistan. It would be fatal if the outgoing government of President Donald Trump were to undo its own success there “in the last few meters” without need, Maas told the “editorial network Germany”.
“I don’t want us to have to explain to our soldiers and their relatives at some point that they have given their lives in vain or even sacrificed them.”
Maas had previously expressed concern about the stability of Afghanistan. The US government has announced that it will reduce the number of US soldiers in Afghanistan from 4,500 to 2,500 by January 15.
